Benjamin F. Butler by Guy Lefebvre Benjamin F. Butler was born Deerfield N. H. Nov. 5, 1818 and came to
Lowell with his mother at the age of ten. After graduating from Lowell
High School he attended Waterville (Colby) College. On completing
his education he was admitted to the Middlesex County Bar in 1841 and married
Sarah Hildreth at St. Anne's Church Lowell on May 16, 1844. He practiced
law in Lowell and pursuing an interest in politics, was elected to the
state Senate in 1878. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War,
left the army as a Major General, returned to his law practice in Lowell
