Lowell and the Civil War

First Blood: Lexington of 1861

 

 

                                                            Benjamin F. Butler organized the Lowell City Guards, Massachusetts 6th Regiment

                                                            and was the first to respond to President Lincoln's call for troops at the outbreak of

                                                            the Civil War. On April 19, 1861, while marching through Baltimore on the way to

                                                            Washington, DC the 6th was attacked by southern sympathizers. Among first to fall

                                                            were Luther Ladd and Addison Whitney, buried -- Ladd and Whitney Monument in

                                                            front of Lowell City Hall.
